AUSTIN, TX- I was not prepared for the sonic journey that awaited me as British band Youth Sector took the stage for the first time in my music experience. These fellows were a ton of fun. The atmosphere of the venue as they played was electric. From the first strum of the guitar to the last beat of the drums, Youth Sector swept the crowd into a world of rhythm, melody, and thought-provoking lyrics. Their music, an intoxicating cocktail of pop-infused punk/funk, felt both familiar and groundbreaking, a testament to the band’s skillful fusion of time-honored genres with a fresh perspective.
I was really drawn to the band’s bass player. That dude played with a funky ferocity that was infectious. The post-punk/new wave vibes were particularly strong from that fella and that contributed to Youth Sector’s seemingly innate knack for melody. The infectious rhythms had an indelible pull—feet tapped, heads nodded, bodies swayed. It was a full immersion into the world they created with their sound. The audience responded, caught up in the raw energy that pulsed from the stage, swept along by the tide of sound that was both anthemic and deeply personal, even engaging in loud-voiced call and response during one of their songs.
It was clear that Youth Sector had gained new fans with that performance. Myself included.
