AUSTIN, TX- There was very little that I could find out about this band, but Sketch was the first act I caught during my week exploring SXSW. They weren’t on my radar prior to catching them perform, but I enjoyed their eclectic fusion of various musical genres (funk, hip-hop, jazz, soul) so much that I’ve given them a follow across social media.

“Sketch is an emerging band hailing from Austin, Texas, comprising a group of established artists who share a common goal: to produce exceptional music […] The band features a quintet lineup, consisting of James Alexander Adkins on drums and vocals, Montez Garner on bass guitar and microphone, Jon Deas on keyboards, Matt Muehling on guitar, and Dayne Reliford on keyboards.”
I was particularly impressed with James Adkins taking the “Phil Collins” approach to drumming, featured as one of the band’s lead vocalists. The dude’s not only got a soulful voice, but he lays that beat down strong.
As if I wasn’t already feeling what they were laying down, they dropped a faithful cover of Thundercat’s “Them Changes”. I love me some Thundercat. I love that they sounded damn good playing that jam. That alone earned my respect.
