LOS ANGELES, CA- Joseph Holiday is a musician who performs under the moniker of Snakes of Russia, and his instrumental set at on of Crook’s residency dates at the echo really blew me away. His music heavy and pulsing. It featured dark and unsettling sounds, with a sense of foreboding and tension. His music incorporated industrial noises, and electronic sounds to create an eerie and haunting atmosphere.
There was a real emphasis on percussive and rhythmic elements to evoke a sense of urgency and anxiety. While the music didn’t incorporate vocals, all of the fragmented melodies, and abrupt shifts in tempo or tone to reflect the chaotic and unpredictable nature of a dystopian world to a really cinematic effect.
For his 30+ minute set, I was immersed a gloriously bleak and oppressive environment, evoking feelings of fear, uncertainty, and despair…. I loved it all.
