AUSTIN, TX- In the time that has passed since I captured the live performance of Victoria Canal at Half Step during the renowned South By Southwest, her journey has been nothing short of remarkable. The talented songstress hosted an awe-inspiring concert in the heart of Los Angeles, sharing the stage with an impressive collection of her extraordinarily talented peers. Adding another feather to her cap, she was awarded the coveted Ivor Novello Rising Star Award in May.
The gifted artist hasn’t stopped there. Canal has released a stunning array of new music, courageously delving into the depths of her personal insecurities about her body. This candor has struck a chord with audiences, resulting in her being announced as BBC Radio’s future artist of the month for June.
Further broadening her horizons, Canal recently revealed she will be spreading her soulful sound across Europe, acting as one of Hozier’s opening acts throughout July. Unsurprisingly, these accomplishments are just a snapshot of the recent good fortune Canal has enjoyed, a testament to her undeniable talent.
Just weeks ago, I penned a tribute to Canal’s prodigious talent. Today, I find myself recounting a particular performance that cemented for me the fact that talent indeed transcends all obstacles. When a technical glitch saw Canal’s setlist go awry due to a malfunctioning keyboard, both she and her accompanist Lucy Clearwater navigated the disruption with artistic grace.
Armed with their acoustic guitars and in Clearwater’s case, a violin, they ingeniously improvised the majority of the performance. In these moments, with audience anticipation hanging thick in the air, the pair creatively deliberated on song choices that could work sans keyboard, performing pieces initially intended for keyboard accompaniment.
In the face of adversity, the duo delivered an unforgettable performance that served as a reminder of how talent can adapt and rise above unexpected circumstances. Though unplanned and faced with technological impediments, this moment in time underscored how music and talent invariably find a way to shine brightly.
Since this remarkable performance, Canal has continued to illuminate the music scene with her talent and charisma. So here’s to Victoria Canal, a testament to resilience, talent, and the power of music. Massive kudos to her.
