WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA- If you attended Outloud Fest this year, you know that the Summertramp stage was the place to be if your favorite artist hadn’t taken the main stage yet. That, or it was the focal point of your weekend altogether. An oasis of bass and synthesizers, Summertramp captured the essence of summertime rave exuberance. Whether you were on your feet dancing to your favorite remix with one of the phenomenal DJs on the decks, or you were catching your breath while sipping a drink in one of the giant pool floats, this stage always had something new and exciting waiting to catch your attention.
As someone who grew up going to punk shows, I’ve never been much of an electronic music girl. I absolutely understand the appeal of a good DJ, but let’s just say I’ve never had going to a rave on my bucket list. A weekend of seeing the talent that the Summertramp stage had to offer may have just converted me. Maybe not enough to trade my Doc Martens and chains for colorful furry boots and kandi bracelets, but the way they executed it was so much fun.
The range of DJs they had was incredible. Horse Meat Disco, Cherry Lee, Matt Suave, Only Fire, and Memphy were just a few of the DJs who brought the sounds that kept people moving. You had famous faces that the entire crowd went absolutely crazy for, like former Real Housewives star Meredith Marks dazzling with an incredible set and pink bedazzled headphones. There were also artists like Alex Chapman, who has worked with pop royalty like Kim Petras, Charli XCX, and Troye Sivan. Honey Dijon, who won a Grammy for her work on Beyoncé’s Renaissance, closed out the stage on Sunday with a stellar send-off for all of us.
The thing that struck me most about Summertramp was all of the exceptional drag and go-go performers that graced the stage all weekend. It was a huge rotating cast of dancers and drag artists that took the vibes to an entirely different level. Through even the hottest moments of the festival, their energy was unmatched, and it gave everyone else permission to let loose and have as much fun as possible. All of them were of different backgrounds and body types, making it feel like you could truly be yourself while in that crowd.
Speaking of drag performers, Summertramp had some of the best. Australian drag artist Jimi the Kween stunned alongside dancers during her set. Onya Nerve, our currently reigning Drag Race Season 17 winner, performed an absolutely sickening number to a Doechii mix. She was also wearing an amazing suit dress inspired by Doechii’s look at the Grammys. Another Drag Race alumna and winner, Aquaria, took the stage alongside The Knocks and Dragonette.
Known for her stunning looks in Season 10, Aquaria has always been one of my favorite performers. Finally seeing her live was such a treat, and the way it was done was so unique. I’ve seen drag queens perform original live music, but it isn’t very often that you see drag performers alongside a vocalist in the way this was done. It was a collaboration between The Knocks, a DJ duo featuring Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson, and Dragonette, also known as Martina Sorbara. The three came together for the music and visuals for the new record Revelation, which was released just after the festival. It all meshed into a beautiful set that sounded and looked absolutely flawless. It was a great encapsulation of the edgy glamour and freedom of expression coming from Summertramp all weekend.
