AUSTIN, TX- I always love it when an act that I like catches me by surprise. That’s what happened when I saw Pinky Pinky at Parish during my stay at SXSW.
Since I’m L.A. based, I tend to stay away from L.A. based acts when I’m at SXSW because I can always catch them playing a gig around town. I meandered into Parish a little early to catch another band play when I noticed the trio setting up to play a set. Just my luck.
Pinky Pinky embodies the essence of fun, no-shits given, psychedelic garage rock. Catchy hooks, personal- if silly- lyrics, enveloped by woozy guitars riffs, and steady bass lines and beats are this band’s hallmark. Their latest single, “My Friend Sean” (released May 1st, 2019) is pretty representative of the kind of music that they play.
Musically, their performance at Parish was solid, although I think that the stage set-up did them a bit of disservice. Their drummer, Anastasia Sanchez, is also their vocalist. Her drum kit was positioned waaaay upstage, and the stage itself was waaay too deep. While Eva (bass) and Isabelle (guitar) were a little further downstage and easily viewable by the audience, Anastasia’s position on stage didn’t give the audience a real chance to see the sass and attitude that she was singing with, and for me, that really makes a difference. Pushing her drum kit closer to the front of the stage would have given the audience a better opportunity to connect with the not only the band but the band’s music. Just my two cents.
Their debut album, “Turkey Dinner”, is scheduled for release June 14th, and they’ll be celebrating the occasion when they take the stage at Bonnarroo Music and Arts Festival. That’s one hell of a way to celebrate an album release.
