LONG BEACH, CA- While Reggae originated in the island country of Jamaica, other islands have embraced the sounds and culture of the genre. The Islands of Hawaii were well represented at One Love, and one of the bands to grace a stage over the weekend was Ookllah The Moc.
Formed in 1997, Ooklah The Moc grew out from the island of Oahu, Hawaii. With three dedicated vocalists and five instrumentalists, their brand of roots reggae spread joy throughout the crowd during their performance.
What I loved most about Ooklah The Moc was how authentic their roots reggae was. Had I not looked them up on Facebook, I would have never guessed that they were Hawaiian. Often times, local or regional language inflections will creep into the style of music (trust me… I’ve seen plenty of Southern Californian reggae bands, and you can tell they were born in LA…).
Their musicality was on point as well. I can’t quite put my finger on it …. maybe they’re just a well-oiled machine … but there was something about their musicality that just seemed to be a little more sophisticated that some of the other bands I caught this weekend. Maybe it was the harmonies on vocals. Maybe it was subtle horn lines. Like I said, I can’t quite put my finger on it … but it was good, and it had me smiling throughout the performance.
