LOS ANGELES, CA- Kicking off the music on the last day of Grilschool was the band Polartropica. On their Facebook page, they describe themselves as “SPARKLY GLITTER-POP GALAXY!!!”. I think that’s a pretty good descriptor.
The band, fronted by the petite but “sparkly” Ihui Wu, gave the early Girlschool attendees a nice whallop of their distinctly unique electronic-psych-J pop sound that I’ve never heard before. It was almost as if I was listening to a really good soundtrack of a Final Fantasy role playing game.
I could see the joy in Ihui’s face as she performed. I found out afterwards that the day was particularly special for her as she was able to celebrate her birthday at the venue, and with all of the entertained fans fawning over her entertaining performance I certainly hope that she felt the birthday love as well,
