Miya Folick Enhanced Her Emotions At The Fonda Theatre THOUGHTS+PHOTOS: MIYA FOLICK @ FONDA THEATRE 4/10/18
LOS ANGELES, CA- When I heard that Miya Folick was scheduled to open for Kate Nash on Kate’s “Yesterday Was Forever” Tour, I was excited. After all, I could distinctly remember her powerful performance last year when she performed for Lauren Ruth Ward’s Residency.
Since that performance, I took the time to dig into her 2017 EP “Give It To Me”. The collection of 5 songs. It’s an eclectic set of cuts that really reveal Miya’s deep personal roots. Each composition is colored with a strong emotion and that passionate essence really drive the EP. The title track of the EP is particularly powerful, and it was equally powerful when I saw her perform it live last year.
Her performance at The Fonda seemed to be an opportunity for Miya to enhance those emotions through movement, as she enlisted the help of the Los Angeles based choreographer Sarah C Prinz to dance along side her throughout the performance. While I think that Miya’s music is powerful enough to express all of the sentiments she’s trying to emote, Sarah’s lithe movements synched well with the emotional rollercoaster that Miya was singing.
There were a a couple of songs that she performed that I didn’t recognize that sounded a little more pop-leaning that the sonics I recalled on from her 2017 EP, but by the time she sang “Give It To Me”, it all came back to my comfort zone.
