My curiosity convinced me to check out Julie Holter’s set at FYF. Having listened to the last album she released, the critically acclaimed “Have You In My Wilderness” (2015), a number of times, I wanted to see how she would translate her complex arrangements of layered sounds live. I was pleasantly surprised to find that she took the stage with a troupe of musicians to perform her late afternoon set at FYF. With a string quartet (un upright bass, cello, and two violins) backing her her up, the sound in the FYF tent she performed in was lush and full.
There may have been a slight technical snag that delayed her set time about 7 minutes, and that was a shame as that could have been an extra song they could have played for the audience, but after Julia graciously thanked the audience for being patient, she and her band played a beautifully nuanced set that had the audience swaying to the her enchanting melodies.
