Los Angeles, CA- There’s nothing more satisfying for me than to watch a recording artist develop over the course of several years. I knew the from the first time I saw Gabriel perform back in 2015 at The Regent Theater that the kid was musically talented. His live show then, however, left a little to be desired. Flash forward to the present day to his performance at KRCW/Annenberg’s “Sound In Focus” concert series 7/15/17, and all I can say is that he’s polished his sound (and performance) into something truly special.

Having released his debut studio album “Jardin” (which translated to English from French means “garden”) at the start of this year, this Brooklynite is taking his brand of R&B and funk infused, neo-soul and seductively enticing the casual listener to pay attention. His stage and instruments were adored with his trademark decorations of flowers, a veritable garden from which to bestow his sonics to a willing audience on this gorgeous summer day.

He performed with a confident swagger; with a looseness that hinted at bravado yet also maintained a nobly humble quality. It was a confidence that I certainly didn’t see two years, and I believe it’s a confidence that’s derived from the music that he’s recently released. I can only speculate, but it’s as if in this moment, in this cycle, Gabriel has written the music and created that sound that truly embodies everything and every part of who he currently is.

This stage was his garden, and he was a flower among the flowers that lined the stage waiting to bloom. With each passing song, we got to see and hear Gabriel open up and present his art, until all of his petals had spread. Towards the end, the garden could no longer restrain him, and to his adoring fans, he tossed his flowers out into the crowd where eager fans were outstretched to catch everything he was throwing out.
