For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they from, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.

WHO: Maggie Rogers.
WHAT: Eccentric indie electronic pop.
WHEN: 3/17/2017 at Youtube at Coppertank.
WHERE: Easton, Maryland.
WHY: If something makes Pharrell Williams’ jaw drop, you pay attention.
HOW: The anticipation for Maggie’s performance at Youtube’s Coppertank showcase was palpable. There was excitement for both The Lemon Twigs and Chloe X Halle, but it reached a fever pitch right before Maggie took the stage. For most in the room, based on the chatter I overheard, their only exposure to Maggie’s music was the video that is posted above- that was the case for me as well.
Performing with a full band backing her, however, Maggie made sure that those in the room had a full sense of the she is and the artist she will become. Organic electronic sonics set the mood, as her relaxed vocals sang effortless melodies over them. When the rhythms intensified, her body gesticulated in movements that seemed guided by what she was feeling in her heart at that moment. It was pure, it was natural and it was very engaging.
