Nicole Kiki Jaffe’s Simple Lyrical Honesty Drew Me In REVIEW+PHOTOS: NICOLE KIKI JAFFE @ THE ECHO 1/15/18
ECHO PARK, CA- Lauren Ruth Ward‘s residency at the Echo/Echoplex was more than just a chance for her to flex her seemingly otherworldly talents. It was also an opportunity for a number her talented friends to showcase their music to an audience that they perhaps would not have had the chance to otherwise. Lauren is such a vibrant member of the local musical/arts community, it was almost no surprise to discover that her friends shine just as brightly as she does.
Opening up Lauren’s second residency date was singer songwriter Nicole Kiki Jaffe. I enjoyed her performance. There was a simple lyrical honesty to her music that I found myself connecting with. She performed most of her set with a backing band, but it was the two stripped down songs she played solo that really made an impression on me. Her song “Dresser Drawer” was heartbreakingly lovely and her tribute to the recently deceased lead singer of The Cranberries (Dolores O’Riodan) performing “Zombie” was perfectly suited her vocal range.
There wasn’t much I could find on the Internet about her- other than she’s a pretty serious graphic designer/web developer- so it’ll be interesting see how far she decides to take her music. Give her a follow and keep tabs on her too.
