Graciela Beltrán is a Mexican singer and actress and happens to be one of the most influential voices in the genre of regional Mexican music. In a musical genre that has traditionally been dominated by cantantes (Spanish for male singers), her voice has been one that has opened up the musical style, solidifying the woman’s place in it.
From one non-speaker to another, I can truthfully state that I had a ball simply watching Ms. Beltrán perform. Amongst her many accolades, I would be remiss not to point out that she is also an accomplished actress, and she put together the total package on stage at L.A. Pride. Although I was unable to understand the words that she sang, I need only watch her facial expressions and body movement to feel the sentiment that she was expressing through her lyrics. So much passion, and joy, and pain …. as the horns punched out staccato notes, she responded with an equally powerful vocal performance.
Midway through her performance, Ms. Beltrán invited up to the stage another popular voice of the Mexican Traditions, Carmen Jara. For a moment, as the two women sang and laughed and danced on stage, it almost felt as if we were observing a private party. The joy the two had with each other on stage was infectious and smiles were visible from every corner of the audience in front of the Latin Stage.
Two divas on stage, singing the music that made them national treasures. Amongst a crowd full of divas, their shadows loomed larger than life.
