LOS ANGELES, CA- On a night when Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ were to take the venerable Hollywood Bowl stage, Taj made sure that the evening’s festivities were truly a family affair by having his amazingly talented daughter, Deva, kick things off with an impressive performance.
With music coursing through her veins, Deva delighted the audience with her soulfully resonant voice; a voice that easily filled every nook of the venue. Having released her debut full length album, Run Deep, earlier this year, she gave anyone in the audience who may have been unfamiliar with her repertoire good reason to seek it out.
On her debut album, there are two side artist features: Coco Peila on “Run Deep” and Allen Stone on “Turnt Up”. Like her father, Deva opted to share the stage with those she close to her, including Coco Peila for “Run Deep”. But it was the unexpected appearance by the another soulful songstress, Lesidi, that really caught me by surprise. Together, the two women performed a beautiful rendition of Deva’s “It’d Down To You” that, simply put, took my breath away.
