Dana Point, CA- The Mattson 2 are a So-Cal based guitar and drum duo of Jared and Jonathan Mattson. Before you get any unwarranted preconceptions about the foregoing description, let me assure you, they aren’t the typical drum and guitar band that you’re probably used to.
These twins play a style music that explores the sonic boundaries of funk and jazz, creating lush sonic landscapes that a listener can easily get lost in, and for an early afternoon set on the final day of The Ohana Fest, these gents hypnotized us with their instrumental arrangements.
There’s an intricacy to their music that I think gets lost on the casual listener. I don’t know much about this band, but if I’d have to guess, I would assume that they were either mentored by a musical genius or have seriously studied music at an academic institution. The way they seamlessly incorporated instrumental loops, the way they hit the off beat, they way they modulated rhythms … it was organized madness, and man … I heard it all, and it was freaking awesome.
