AUSTIN, TX- For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they based, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.

WHO: Elle Graham p/k/a “Woodes”.

WHAT: Indie Electronic.

WHEN: The Backyard Stage – Sheraton Austin Hotel on 3/13/2017.

WHERE: Melbournes, Australia.

WHY: Woodes is kind of a big deal in her native homeland. Last year, she released her debut, solo single “Daggers & Knives” which was added to rotation on Australian radio, which eventually recorded over 300,000 plays and received heaps of praise from high profile outlets like triple j. Since then, her subsequent releases, “The Thaw” and “Rise”, have been stoking the flames that had already been ignited. Was I going to miss the opportunity to catch her first ever performance in the United States? I think not.

HOW: Despite some minor technical issues at the start of her performance, I was quickly mesmerized by her music during the early evening set time. Now, pulling double duty as photographer, I realized that upon counting the number of shots I took during her performance, I had taken far fewer photos than I normally would take. I think I can explain. It was her music. It soothed and lulled me into a such a relaxed state that as I sat on the perfectly manicured lawn on which the stage was set up, and as the Texas sun set in the west, I had been lulled away from my duty to take photos by a siren’s soothing song. Folks … I’d keep an eye (and ear) on this one. Woodes has got the goods.
