Stumbling Upon Poison Ruïn’s Raw Punk Energy at SXSW Thoughts+Photos: Poison Ruin at Hotel Vegas During SXSW 2/14/23
AUSTIN, TX- I hadn’t planned on checking Poison Ruïn out, but as fate would have it, I was walking by Hotel Vegas on my way to catch an act at a different venue, and I decided to drop in for a minute to grab a beer. Lucky for me, Poison Ruïn was setting up as I ordered my brew.
Poison Ruïn is a Philly-based punk outfit, that evolved from the solo project of DIY multi-instrumentalist Mac Kennedy. Their music has a dark aesthetic to it, with haunting post-punk edges, but mixes in some pretty damn exciting deathrock flourishes here and there. The combination of their punk energy and metal make for a soundthat really delivers a raw, powerful punch. In a live setting, the band brings a rawness and urgency that adds dimension to their music.
I checked out their latest album, Härvest, post SXSW, and quite enjoyed it the way they tied in medieval imagery and social issues (mostly class inequality from what I gather), to their hard hitting music. Lots of angst in those 11 Härvest tracks. Definitely got the blood in my veins curdling. If I hadn’t had my camera gear on, I probably would have started a little mosh-pit in that the Hotel Vegas bar.
