LOS ANGELES, CA- It was a performance that wasn’t much longer than 30 minutes, but man … did it pack a powerful punch.
Headlining Girlschool’s Saturday performances was the inimitable Shirley Manson. An always vocal proponent for women’s rights, Manson was accompanied by an all-women orchestral ensemble and an all women choir (who were positioned in the middle of the venue’s floor and consisted of other performers form the weekend) and performed a six song set that was perfectly tailored for the woman-centric occasion. I mean … without even knowing the lyrics, you could take look at the song titles and have a sense of the positive messaging that Manson was trying to convey.
But the coup de grace of the performance was Manson being able to lure Fiona Apple out to join her on stage for a number. Wearing a white t-shirt with the words “Kneel, Portnow” handwritten with a permanent marker (a reference to Grammy president Neil Portnow’s insensitive statement about women in the music industry), Apple didn’t have to sing a note to have her message heard. BUT … fact that Manson and Apple performed a cover of the Lesley Gore classic “You Don’t Own Me”? Classic.
For all of the aspiring artists and feminists in the room, the visual of two seemingly disparate personalties sharing a moment on stage to stand up to and rebel against the machine through the arts was something that won’t soon be forgotten, and will surely inspire others to speak their truths and be heard.
