Kicking off the musical offering for Red Bull Sound Select’s 10th day of “30 Days In LA” was the Washington DC trio, SHAED. Their electro-pop style of music was very polished, but what make them stand out from other female-fronted synthpop bands is the vocal power of their lead singer, Chelsea Lee.

Max and Spencer Ernst (who happen to be twin brothers) do a solid job on the backing vocals and instrumentals, but the “wow factor” was in Ms. Lee’s crystal clear and soulful soprano voice.  When she belt her notes, she does so with such an apparent ease, it probably makes other singers slightly jealous.

I’ll go a step further to even say that SHAED is more than just a sythpop group. The temptation is to compare them to bands like Chvrches or Purity Ring, but Chelsea’s voice is just to soulful to be classified as such. I tried searching for vocal stems for some of their tracks (which I couldn’t find), but I’ll guarantee that if you could isolate Chelsea’s vocals, especially on a track like “Just Wanna See”, you could swear that she was a R&B/soul singer.

I dig this band’s vibe. I’m keeping an eye on them.

Mad props goes out to Montell2099 for doing double duty at this “30 Days In LA” event. Apparently, Charli XCX was running a little late, traveling from South America the same day to perform in Los Angeles. As such, Montell2099 had extended time to spin records to keep the crowd engaged until the headliner took the stage.
