Why I Wanted To See Calliope Musicals: Calliope Musicals was another band on my list of acts to possibly catch at SXSW, and as fate would have it, I was at the right place and the right time. I was wrapping up and interview with The LagoonsĀ when my interviewees and I head some awesomely frenetic, psychedelic sonics coming from inside Swan Dive. We wrapped up the interview quick and went inside to catch the band playing, and that band was Calliope Musicals. Yay!
What I Though Of CalliopeĀ Musicals Performance: I read a ton of great, local press on Calliope Musicals as they had been named Austin Chronicle’s Best New Band in 2015 andĀ Austin Chronicle’s Band of the Year in 2016.
Wow. This band puts on one hell of a performance.Ā Even for a sparse crowd in the middle of the afternoon, Calliope Musicals entertained me like they were performing a headlining slot for a 1000 capacity venue.
Their bright attire and “special effects” (which was a band member who flashed a spotlight into our faces during the performance at one point then donned an alien spacesuit in another) were visually stimulating, but what really got me going was the total group energy that the ensemble shared. Particularly engrossing was Calliope Musicals’ front woman Carrie Fussell. As she danced around the stage barefoot in the billowing silver dress, I couldn’t help but feel the joy she was radiating during her performance. It was confident, fun and filled with a joie de vivre that not many people can pull off.
