Los Angeles, CA- Headlining KCRW’s second installment of the Rebel Rebel concert series at the Hammer Museum on July 13th, 2017 was the soulful chanteuse Niia. Having released her long awaited debut album “I” earlier this year (May 5th, 2017), Los Angeles was ready to have her stirring melodies gently reverberate against the courtyard’s walls … and what she gave to the audience was musical perfection.
Music and musicality courses through Niia’s viens. With musicians in her family, you can literally say that it’s in her blood. But it’s the years she spent studying at a musical conservatory and the once in a lifetime opportunity to tour and record with Wyclef Jean that seems to have really molded her into the artist that she currently is.
Everything about Niia’s performance was impeccable. From her perfectly coifed and braided hair, to the sharp, subtly sheer black ensemble she wore, to the undeniably sultry mood that she conjured up …. there was an aura that Niia created with her performance that, in my humble opinion, was intended to exceed expectations. Does that make sense? It felt like every aspect of her performance was a piece of a puzzle that was meant to be put perfectly together. Even Niia wouldn’t settle for anything less the perfect from herself as was evidenced when she started a song, only to abruptly stop to let the audience know that she had to start it over because it just didn’t feel right to her.
And while Niia admitted that her performance at the Hammer Museum for KCRW’s Rebel Rebel Concert Series was the largest crowd she’s ever performed a solo gig for, she exhibited no signs of timidity or nervousness. She allowed her seductive compositions, manifested by her warmly soothing voice, to take over the entire venue, filling it with the kind of sensuality that we would expect an artist like Sade to give off. And as her voice reverberated against the venue’s courtyard walls, Niia gave the audience a little slice of perfection that I’m sure fans will be longing to experience again soon.
