Santa Monica, CA- Mr. Elevator is pretty damn trippy.

Opening for the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame singer Eric Burden at Santa Monica Pier’s Twilight Concerts on July 20, 2017, as the bright summer sun slowly dipped into Pacific Ocean, Mr. Elevator played a set that was heavy with psychedelic sonics that harkened back to the era of The Doors.  Their music is heavy with keys and percussion with two keyboardist playing everything from organs, electric piano and synths and two percussionists. I noted early on that the only other stringed instrument they used was an electric bass. It’s not often you find a rock band without either a rhythm or lead guitar.

As they played their psych infused compositions, I was particularly drawn to the extended instrumental jams that they would dive deep into. Those moments grooved and flowed with a kind of energy you would only find in an unscripted yet focused jam session.

Now, I’m unfamiliar with their catalogue of music so I can’t declare how much, or whether, they improvised what they played, but I think that it speaks volumes that their music gave me that impression. Free flowing and effortless psychedelic rock: a perfect soundtrack to have as the sun set in the west.
