Westwood, CA- For the Hammer Museum and KCRW’s final installment of the “Rebel Rebel” concert series, attendees were treated to the bilingual musicality of the latin alternative recording artist Maria del Pilar. Maria is a very big voice in the transnational Chilean alternative / electronic pop scene, and has had some success over the past couple years in the states having music placed in various television shows and being heralded by outlets as “one of the most important voices in the Latin Alternative music scene in the United States” (CNN Español).
Though many in the crowd at the Hammer Museum may not have been fluent in the Spanish language, Maria enchanted them all with her light and breezy sonics, and had them swaying to her rhythms. This was an instant music became magical, where the sonics and mood alone captured imaginations.
There are times when I wish I would have studied Spanish rather than French in my youth, and this was one of those times. I’m sure I would have been even more impressed if I could understand the content of her compositions.
