Long Beach, CA- I’m familiar with cumbia … and I’m familiar with electronica … but Cumbiatronico? I got my introduction, and education, to the genre at Music Tastes Good from the Guadalajara-based band Los Master Plus.

This group’s music is extraordinarily fun. Cumbia is always fun to dance to, but when you throw in new wave synths, charisma and banging loud drums, it pretty irresistible. Despite them singing in their native tongue, I was still able to groove out to the sonics that they were putting out.

They got the crowd even more engaged when they put their own cumbia twists on covers of some popular American songs. They performed No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak”, Kings of Leon’s “Sex On Fire” and even paying some respect to the host city with a cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Doggy Dogg World”. All in all, it was cumbia infused fun for everyone who was able to catch them perform.
