WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA- The New York City-based duo Lion Babe was the first act on the second day of L.A. PRIDE that I was able to catch perform. Having released their debut album, “Begin”, earlier this year, Jillian Hervey and Lucas Goodman brought their modern take on R&B and neo-soul infused, disco vibes to the West Hollywood masses, causing the audience to spontaneously bust into some fervent booty-shaking.
Their live show is electric, and much of that is due to Ms. Hervey’s spirited stage presence. Wearing a colorful ensemble of a rainbow laced leotard and matching feathered headdress, Ms. Hervey danced, leapt and bound across the stage to infuse life into a crowd that was ready for the party to get started. She was accompanied on stage by a muscular male figure, but truth be told, Ms. Hervey didn’t need any help. Her stage energy was so boundless that even the massive stage couldn’t contain it.
But let’s not forget how infectious Lion Babe’s music is. There is a reason why notables like Pharrell, Disclosure and Sam Smith are fans. With a uniquely seductive voice that has drawn comparisons to Erykah Badu, Ms. Hervey’s voice glides through Mr. Goodman’s swirling drum programming, which forces those in the audience to multitask listening with dancing.
Lion Babe will start a headlining US tour on July 1st. If you have a chance to catch them at an intimate venue, I highly suggest you do.
