LOS ANGELES, CA- I got swept off my feet again, transported to another era, with Laufey’s latest single, “Silver Lining.” The Icelandic-Chinese chanteuse has a habit of conjuring entire worlds with a single phrase, a delicate run of piano, a velvet-lined vocal lilt. With “Silver Lining”, she once again proves that no matter how many young crooners don vintage gowns and stand behind ribbon mics, no one summons the spirits of Ella and Etta quite like Laufey.
While the song’s lyrics flirt playfully with the idea of love as a delicious descent into depravity — “Even if it takes you to hell, at least you’re with your partner,” she explains in the press release — Laufey delivers them with such poise and sophistication that they transcend their cheeky core. It’s tongue-in-cheek romance wrapped in satin gloves, the sort of elevated songwriting that sounds like it was plucked from a mid-century jazz standard and smuggled into the present through some shimmering time portal.
The production, lush and orchestral, sweeps you into the masquerade ball fantasia of the accompanying video, shot gorgeously on 35mm by frequent collaborator Jason Lester. As strings swell and the chaos of the visual unfolds into a Rite of Spring-esque fever dream, Laufey remains the unwavering center — a portrait of composure amid the surrealism, her voice a guiding light through it all.
This is the first taste of new music following her GRAMMY-winning Bewitched, and it marks a striking new chapter. But Laufey’s magic isn’t just found in her studio work — I saw it unfold live last year at the Hollywood Bowl, where she sold out the iconic amphitheater and closed the night with a rapturous rendition of “From The Start” under a sky exploding with fireworks. That performance didn’t just impress — it felt historic. “I’ve loved you, L.A., from the start,” she ad-libbed to the crowd, a line that felt as heartfelt as it was cinematic. That night, just like with this new single, she didn’t just perform — she cast spells.
