West Hollywood, CA- Back in September, I had the chance to see Brayton Bowman open for Parson James at The Peppermint Club. Having recently moved to Los Angeles, this was my first time experiencing his music. It took me a while to get to posting anything about his performance because I wanted to listen to more of his music before I threw out any thoughts into the digital realm, and thankfully I had some time spin his records recently.
Brayton’s performance at The Peppermint Club impressed me. To be specific, his voice impressed me. I could tell he was musically trained (he attended Berklee College of Music) as he knew how to use his breath support to hit incredibly high notes and danced around rhythmically with his vocals. His timbre reminded me of Stokley Williams (the lead singer of Mint Condition and one of my favorite modern day R&B vocalists).
Shortly after his The Peppermint Club performance, he released the single “The Second I’m Rich”.
“The Second I’m Rich” uses a lot of electronic sounds to fill out its sonics, but I am extremely interested to hear this track, and more of Brayton’s music, arranged with a live band. I can only imagine how much more full of life the music would have performed by flesh and blood.
