HOLLYWOOD, CA- Earlier this year, HAIM announced the cancellation of their European tour dates in a handwritten letter explaining that they needed to spend more time working on their sophomore album. After wrapping up their North American, Summer tour dates, the girls went back into the studio to put what their rabid fans hopped were the final touches on their forthcoming album. On the 15th day of Red Bull Sound Select’s “30 Days In LA”, the band graced Los Angeles with what Austin, Texas was lucky enough to hear only a month earlier: the performance of two new cuts.
“Give Me Just a Little of Your Love” and “Nothing’s Wrong” (the two new songs) embodied everything that HAIM-hards (an affectionate term I dub HAIM’s hardcore fans) had grown to love. Filled with their pop-friendly guitar licks and hard hitting rhythms wrapped in nostalgic familiarity, it seems a pretty good bet that the Haim sister’s next album will provid their fans with all of the new, pop-goodness that their fans have been patiently waiting for since 2013.
While they were excited to reveal some of their new songs to their fans, they were even more excited to be playing the Fonda Theatre. They waxed nostalgic about their own personal memories attending shows at the venue, and it almost felt like the venue itself was giving them some kind of joyful energy that made their performance sound and feel as fresh and lively as the first time I saw them perform live (which was at Coachella back in 2014).
They played the two new tracks, they played all of their biggest hits off their debut album, and they even pulled off a satisfying cover of Prince’s “I Would Die For You”, leaving all of the fans who were lucky enough to be inside for the show satisfied themselves.

Kicking off the evening’s music offerings was Steven A. Clark. Though his style of music is quite different from HAIM’s, it does share one pretty interesting similarity: it’s rooted in similar kind of musical nostalgia that HAIM’s music is rooted in.
Steven’s music has a bit of a late 80s – early 90s synthpop vibe to it, and his voice and phrasing (at least when I heard him live) made me think of Seal. But his R&B melodies, and propelling drum sequences, gives his music a modern feel, thus making it not “retro”. It was much too short of a set for me to really get a better opinion of his style of music, but it gave me enough of a sampling to want to learn more about this up and coming recording artist.

The second opening act for the evening was the wonderfully talented Charlotte Day Wilson. I picked up on this gem of a talent during last year’s “30 Days In LA” concert series when I read that she joined BadBadNotGood during their set to perform their collaboration “In Your Eyes”. That recording is smooooth like butter. It was some quiet storm type jam that had Ms. Wilson’s lusty alto vocals infuse an indescribable type of yearning that had me longing for more myself.

Backed by a keyboardist and a drummer, Ms. Wilson took the stage dressed in a custom, red, baseball jersey that Red Bull Sound Select had specially made for the event and for those concert-goers who got to the show early. Her performance was the embodiment of unassuming cool. As she cooed each note of her smoothed out compositions, I found myself mentally easing into a state of mellow bliss.
Her musically was on full display as well and she manned multiple instruments to fill out the sounds of her music. Did you know that she played the Saxophone? I sure didn’t. Was I impressed? I sure was.
