To call Grace Jones fierce is an understatement. That woman is an undeniable force of nature.

Grace Jones 8/28/16 @ Fuck Yeah Fest. Setlist. At 68, she is living proof of the axiom “age ain’t nothing but a number”. Wearing only boots, a g-string, various head dresses and body paint, she commanded the FYF Main Stage with the kind of fearlessness that a honey badger exhibits when threatened by forces 5 times it’s size.

With two simple words, “Let’s party,” Grace Jones set the tone for her set, and performed the rhythmic music that once made her “The Queen of Gay Discos”. With over 10 studio albums in her repertoire, her setlist was filled with tracks that she had released as singles. “My Jamaican Guy”, “Pull Up To The Bumper”, “Slave to the Rhythm” … if you knew anything about Grace Jones’ music, you would have definitely heard a jam you were familiar with.

The crowd was relatively light at the start of her set. That being the case, I was able to make my way up front and center with relative ease.  After three songs, I decided to find my friends who were boozing in the bar area. Obviously, Grace Jones’ music was a sweet nectar, as festival patrons began to file into the venue and I found myself taking a full song (“Walking In The Rain”) to simply reach the crowd’s edge.

Later in the evening, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy would state, matter of factly, that:

“If you missed Grace Jones tonight, you fucked up.”

I couldn’t agree more. An artist like Grace Jones is a rarity. Her fusion of fashion, performance art and music is the blueprint for all of the Lady Gagas in the world. There can only be one original. Grace Jones is that.
