SAN DIEGO, CA- Bleached Fest, the place where sound and spirit intertwine, recently saw an incandescent set from none other than the ever-radiant Cannons. Following previous encounters with the trio, one might wonder if the allure could persist. But as the sun dipped and the first note resonated, it was clear: the magic was far from exhausted.
The air was thick with anticipation as fans gathered in the shadow of the stage. Having see them perform numerous times, , I came prepared for a synthesis of sultry synth-pop and dreamy soundscapes.
As usual, lead vocalist Michelle Joy was the epitome of celestial charm. Draped in a sheer, black catsuit that highlighted Cannon’s naturally sensual charm, her voice floated through the midday sky. Each lyric, each sigh, was felt as profoundly as it was heard. It was evident in tracks like their seminal track “Fire for You,” where the crowd swayed in unanimous adoration, ensnared by her ethereal draw.
Paul Davis on the keys and Ryan Clapham on the drums provided the undulating beats that underpinned the evening. The transitions between their 80s-inspired synth beats and more contemporary dream-pop elements were seamless, as always. Their performance was a testament to their musical prowess, combining nostalgia with a future-facing perspective.
Highlights of the night included a heart-rendering rendition of “Bad Dream,” where Joy’s vocals intertwined with the atmospheric synths, creating a tapestry of sound and emotion and a performance of their then-new song “Desire”.
Despite having seen Cannons multiple times, each show feels like the first. They possess the rare ability to evoke both nostalgia and novelty simultaneously. At Bleached Fest, they took us on a trip, showcasing their unique blend of moody electronics and heartfelt lyricism, leaving us yearning for more.
