AUSTIN, TX—As the sun climbed higher on an early afternoon at SXSW, I found myself drawn to the stage where Cosmo Pyke was set to perform. With over 90,000 Instagram followers and more than 290,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, I was intrigued to see what this young artist from the UK had to offer. Cosmo Pyke, whose real name is Cosmo Henry Pyke, has made a name for himself with his distinctive blend of jazz, indie, and soulful sounds.
Cosmo took to the stage with a laid-back demeanor that immediately set a relaxed tone for his set. His stage presence was unpretentious, almost as if he was inviting the audience into his personal creative space. The first few chords of his opening song filled the air, and it was clear that his music carried a warmth and sincerity that resonated with everyone present. His smooth vocals, combined with his intricate guitar work, created an atmosphere that felt both intimate and expansive.
While I was unfamiliar with his music, I thought his melodies were catchy and his lyrics were introspective. There was a sincere level of casual authenticity that made it feel like Cosmo was sharing a piece of his own story with the audience. His ability to seamlessly transition between genres, from jazz-infused rhythms to more indie-tinged melodies, kept the set engaging and dynamic.
Donning the cap of a Google detective, I learned (which could totally be in error) that before he caught attention with his music, Cosmo was a street artist and skateboarder, and I could understand how those influences impacted his artistic approach. His debut EP, “Just Cosmo,” released in 2017, received critical acclaim for its unique sound and lyrical depth. Since then, he has continued to build his repertoire with singles that explore themes of love, life, and self-discovery and release his latest EP, “Low”, on April 5th 2024.
His music, with its soulful undertones and jazz influences, provided to be a perfect soundtrack to a sunny yet slightly overcast afternoon. Cosmo left a favorable impression. As he continues to grow his audience and evolve as an artist, there are good odds that Cosmo Pyke will remain an intriguing artist to follow. If you haven’t yet had the chance to experience his music, I highly recommend diving into his discography – it’s a journey well worth taking.
