LOS ANGELES, CA- In the intimate ambiance of Resident, amid the bustling sounds of Downtown Los Angeles, I enjoyed a riveting evening of heavy sound featuring alternative rock newcomers Phaeic, doom-gaze maestros Iress, and “fairy-doom” innovators Faetooth. I witnessed each band unleash their sonic prowess, from the ethereal intensity of Iress to the poetic duality of Faetooth’s raw power and dreamy whimsy. It was, to say the least, a radiant dive into LA’s rich musical tapestry of glorious metal.
Emerging from the gritty streets of LA, Phaeic, the alternative rock ensemble, presented an electrifying experience. Guided by the charismatic Kris Balocca, Phaeic appears to rise above conventional musical norms. Listening to them for the first time, I couldn’t help but draw parallels. To my ears, there was a distinct echo of Mike Patton’s Mr. Bungle, enriching their already layered sound. Like Mr. Bungle, they skillfully straddle the boundary between nostalgic turmoil and modern clarity.
Their live act was a captivating whirlwind. The sheer rawness and intensity converged into a potent mix of raw passion. As they progressed through their setlist, emotion permeated the atmosphere, with each band member expressing their deepest sentiments, challenging limits, and embracing authentic expression.
Iress, characterized by its sludgy, grungy, and enveloping sound, didn’t disappoint. From their “Flaw” days, they’ve consistently captivated listeners with their dark, alluring musical allure.
Michelle Malley, armed with her mesmerizing alto, guided the band through realms of ethereal musing and sonic intensity. Her voice, oscillating between soft whispers and roaring crescendos, painted an atmosphere that was as entrancing as it was eerie. Given her prowess, it’s unsurprising that she ranks high among my favorite rock vocalists today. The depth, passion, and melancholy resonated in waves of grungy, doom-gaze brilliance.
I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: Michelle’s voice ranks among my favorite female rock vocals. As long as she and her band continue delivering these impactful, emotive tracks, they’ve secured a devoted fan in me.
As the night progressed, Faetooth’s signature “fairy-doom” enveloped the audience. Despite being new to the music scene, the trio exuded the confidence and charm of seasoned artists. Their unique sound, an intriguing blend of intense force and whimsical dreaminess, was unmistakably present throughout their performance.
Drawing inspiration from powerhouses like Neurosis and Chelsea Wolfe, Faetooth showcased a beautifully balanced duality. Their transitions between dreamy shoegaze segments and the raw force of doom metal kept the audience engaged and intrigued. Their adaptability, shifting effortlessly between gentle melodies and intense climaxes, stood out.
While their debut album might be a revelation to many, experiencing them live solidified Faetooth’s position as a formidable force in the music scene. Their blend of doom metal, black metal, and shoegaze crafts a sonic tapestry that deeply resonates.
To sum it up, the evening at The Resident wasn’t just another show. It was a musical expedition across alternative rock, grunge, and doom genres. Each band, distinct in its style, illuminated the diverse potential within the Los Angeles music scene. Truly, an unforgettable night.
