Echo Park, CA- Opening for Ella Vos at The Echoplex on June 27, 2017 was the Los Angeles based electronic, dream-pop band EXES. Fronted by vocalist Allie McDonald, this band has recorded and released a handful of tracks that have racked up some pretty impressive numbers on Soundcloud. I can understand why. Their recordings are sharply produced with dynamic musicality where crescendos and diminuendos hit at the right moments. Their latest recording, “Cain”, exemplifies what I’m talking about. With over 57,000 listens, there are apparently others who probably hear what I hear.
It was a solid live performance. The band seemed to hit all the right notes, and Allie McDonald sounded as good live as she sounds on their recordings. My only bit of constructive criticism would be that I wish Allie’s physicality while singing matched the emotional grandeur of some of the bigger moments of their music. They are a new band, and perhaps they’re all getting their feet wet with performing live, but being uninhibited on stage, I think, would do wonders for their live show.
