LOS ANGELES, CA- As the lights dimmed at the Regent Theater, an air of anticipation filled the room. The crowd, already buzzing with excitement, was about to witness a band that has swiftly garnered a cult following: Friedberg. Known for their eclectic blend of post-punk, alt-rock, and infectious pop hooks, this London/Berlin-based quartet, led by Austrian-born Anna Friedberg, took to the stage with the kind of fervor that promised an unforgettable night.
Opening for Giant Rooks, their set kicked off with “My Best Friend,” a track that immediately captivated the audience with its hypnotic vibe, and one of my favorites, Anna Friedberg’s silky vocals, combined with the band’s tight instrumentation, set the tone for the evening. The song, a staple in many fans’ workout playlists, showcased the band’s knack for creating energizing and meditative music. The prominent cowbell, a signature element in “My Best Friend,” was met with enthusiastic applause, especially from fans in the front row holding a sign that read, “More Cowbell!”
Following the opener, Friedberg treated the audience to a series of unreleased, to my knowledge, bangers. “Better Than We Are,” “Hardcore Workout Queen” and “The Greatest”, despite not being officially released yet, resonated deeply with the crowd. Their introspective lyrics and compelling melodies hinted at the band’s evolving sound, suggesting that their upcoming debut album is set to be a diverse and rich tapestry of musical innovation. Their penchant for crafting anthemic chorus and dynamic shifts demonstrated Friedberg’s ability to craft potent and sonically expansive songs.
Their cover of “Eisbar” continued this trend of showcasing new material. “Eisbar,” originally by the Swiss band Grauzone, was transformed in Friedberg’s hands, becoming a pulsating, danceable track that retained the eerie charm of the original while infusing it with their unique style.
“Hello,” another new single, was a night highlight for me. Its addictive guitar riffs and Anna’s ethereal yet powerful vocals created an atmospheric, grounding and uplifting experience. Like many of their songs, this track seamlessly blends post-punk grit with pop sensibilities, making it a perfect representation of Friedberg’s sound.
“Midi8” closed the set, leaving the audience in a state of euphoria. It’s cowbell-heavy rhythm, and eclectic mix of percussive instruments provided a fitting end to a night that was as unpredictable as it was enjoyable.
Notably absent from the set were “Yeah” and “Never Gonna Pay The Rent,” two tracks that I really had hoped to hear. However, the omission of these songs did little to dampen my spirits. If anything, it served as a reminder of the band’s potential and the anticipation for their future releases.
Seeing Friedberg live amplifies one’s appreciation for their music. The band’s stage presence, coupled with their ability to recreate the intricate sounds of their recordings, makes their live performances twice as compelling. Anna Friedberg’s charisma as a frontwoman is undeniable; she effortlessly commands the stage and connects with the audience.
Friedberg’s performance at the Regent Theater was a testament to their growing prowess as one of today’s most exciting bands in the post-punk and alt-rock scenes. Their ability to blend various musical influences into a cohesive and captivating live show clearly indicates that they are poised for even greater success. As fans eagerly await their debut album, one thing is certain: Friedberg is a band that thrives on pushing boundaries and delivering unforgettable musical experiences… and giving us “more cowbell”.
