LONG BEACH, CA- As far as I know, Jamaica’s first dancehall superstar is Yellowman. His ubiquitous track “Zung Zeng” not only gave reggae music new life in the early 80s, but it also reborn in the mid to late 90s when it was interpolated in popular music by the dance act K7.
On a personal note, his appearance at One Love was an inspiration to me. His legacy filled music notwithstanding, I was particularly moved to see a man who had battled and beat down both throat and skin cancer (which resulted in him having major reconstructive facial surgery) take the stage with a confidence and swagger that behooves an artist of such a legendary status.
His performance had a decidedly positive vibe to it. While he may not be as nimble as he was pre-cancer, he still ran the whole length of the length of the stage as his gravelly voice gave life to his iconic flow.
He made his One Love appearance a family affair when he brought his daughter, K’Reema, on stage to join him for a couple songs. A powerful vocalist in her own right, it was a joy to watch her father dance and hype up her performance as she sang. An already inspiring performance was made that much more special by seeing a father dote proudly on his daughter, and- if you ask me- a perfect way for me to cap off my One Love experience.
