WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA- As the grand finale of Outloud’s second day unfolded, the spotlight firmly landed on Canada’s very own pop luminary, Carly Rae Jepsen. Bursting onto the American music scene in 2011 with the infectiously catchy “Call Me Maybe”, Jepsen has since become a staple of the LGBTQIA+ community, her anthems echoing across queer spaces from coast to coast.
Her music, a delightful cocktail of sugary pop confections, has an uncanny knack for sparking viral sensations. She’s most recently set the TikTok universe ablaze with “The Loneliest Time”, a standout track from her latest album that’s captured the hearts and screens of countless fans.
From the moment Jepsen stepped onto the Outloud stage in a fetching pink and black ensemble, complete with a chic, beret-like cap, she owned the crowd. Opening with “Surrender My Heart”, her performance was nothing short of flawless. Bucking the trend of reserving the heavy-hitters for the finale, Jepsen opted to deliver “Call Me Maybe” midway through the set – a move that held the crowd captive in her pop spell. The infectious energy that radiates from her live performances, coupled with her pitch-perfect vocals, kept the crowd in a state of pure pop ecstasy throughout her set.
Jepsen’s impact on the LGBTQIA+ community stretches far beyond her dancefloor anthems. Her upbeat pop discography, with its themes of unapologetic desire and longing, resonates deeply with many queer fans. Moreover, her unabashed celebration of vulnerability, love, and identity in her lyrics aligns her closely with the community’s shared experiences.
Jepsen, known for her embracing attitude, has always warmly acknowledged her queer fan base, often vocal about her gratitude for their support. In turn, her fans see in her music a safe haven—a pop landscape where feelings are intense, heartbreak is a universal rite, and being ‘too much’ is never enough.
Back at the festival, a motley crowd of concert-goers, spanning different ages, were united in their love for Jepsen’s music. Lyrics were belted out passionately, dance moves were imitated with fervor, and the atmosphere was simply electrifying. As Jepsen closed the show with “Cut To the Feeling”, confetti canons painted a whimsical backdrop, marking the perfect ending to a weekend that celebrated the LGBTQIA+ community, love, and identity.
