Brazilian Girls is so fun. Nouveau disco funk. A sort of 80s punk / post punk feel. They’re all over the place … and that’s their charm.

There’s a sort of “f*ck you” feel to everything happening on stage when they perform. But it’s not the “Wanna fight? Fight me” kind of “f*ck you”. Rather, it’s more akin to the “F*ck you. F*ck me. Let’s all take ourselves a little less seriously and rock a little harder” vibe. Or, in other words, let’s all get f*cked.

On the one hand, just the name of the band makes you feel like you’re getting punked. I mean, how many people are fans just because the name hearkens back to the most ecstatic moments of solitude from the age of 12 to 16 … or 17 to 40. Which ties back into the whole vibe. There’s an undercurrent of mockery but everything about the music is super legit. So it’s like … enthusiastic irony.

Brazilian Girls’ lead singer, Sabine Sciubba, has an air of mischievousness about her. She emits an aura that reminds me a little bit of the Russian roommate in that television show “New Girl”. You know … the roommate that’s a little crazy and unpredictable, but has a good heart and that’s why you love her.

As Sabina Sciubba prowls the stage there’s a thick layering of nostalgia for the wonder women of punk rock past. You feel the strong irreverent energy of Debbie Harry and Exene Cervenka, but you also feel the playfulness of younger bands like actual Brazilian girls CSS. All this is layered over the super creative postmodern mash-up of EDM with South American beats put together by Argentine keyboardist and musical savant Didi Gutman, drummer Aaron Johnston, and bassist Jesse Murphy. Between smatterings of samba and electronica, Sabina screams: “We might be a mess but we love you!”

And we love her back.
