Why I Wanted To See Blank Range: When I was browsing music on Spotify, listening to the music of the artists that were slate to perform at Luck Reunion, I was immediately drawn to the first song (which Spotify designates as the band’s most popular song) on Blank Range’s playlist, “Last Crash Landing”.
This song kinda caught me off guard. After all, I was going to a Willie Nelson hosted music festival. I wasn’t expecting something so fuzzed out and psychedelic with punchy organ work. Noting that that track was released back in 2013, I kept listening to the playlist which then took me through their 2017 album “Marooned with the Treasure”. I immediately noticed how their songwriting had evolved from that 2013 cut. It was decidedly more Americana/county, but still had that psychedelic flavoring, and I liked what I heard.
While their song “Opening Band” seems to be the most popular song off “Marooned with the Treasure”, with it’s everyman hook of “Well, it’s a labor of love, that’s all it ever gonna be”, I was particularly drawn to “Labor Of Love”.
What I Thought Of Blank Range’s Performance: I thoroughly enjoyed Blank Range’s performance. While it was early in the day, and the crowd in their tent was light, this quartet played with a kind of gusto and intuition that evidenced the bond in the music that they all shared. Switching lead vocal duties for different songs, they all shared the “spotlight” at some point during the set.
I also had a pretty weird moment of deja vu. I was pretty sure I’d never seen this band perform before, but they kind of rang really familiar with me. At first I thought it was just because I had gone through their social media profiles and listened to their music, and that was what caused me to have this feeling. But after their performance, when I was looking to see whether the fellas would be down for a quick interview, their guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Childers asked me whether we had ever met before.
Whoa.
We played the name game for a quick minute to no avail, but they were kind enough to hang with me for a little bit to talk about their music and what they’ve got planned this year. At least the next time I see them at a gig, we’ll know where we met.
