For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they from, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.

WHO: The Big Moon are Soph Nathan (guitar, vocals), Celia Archer (bass, vocals), Juliette Jackson (guitar, vocals), and Fern Ford (drums).
WHAT: Indie rock filled with grungy goodness.
WHEN: 3/15/17 at Lustre Pearl.
WHERE: London, England.
WHY: I don’t know how I found it, but I had favorited The Big Moon’s “Sucker” and “Cupid” on Soundcloud when they were released about a year ago. I’ve listened to those song a lot, particularly “Cupid”, and when I saw their names on the SXSW artist roster, and found out that they had over 10 SXSW gigs lined up, I figured I’d give them a go.
HOW: With a new album whose release is imminent (4/7/17), The Big Moon used SXSW- and their 11 or so showcase gigs- to make sure that the masses knew that it was coming. With the fun and polished performance that I saw, I figure that their time in Austin will result in a few more albums sold.
With a small but effective catalog of radio-worthy songs, The Big Moon ripped through their set with smiles and a carefree joi de vivre. Their lead singer, Juliette Jackson, commanded the stage with her presence. Her tall, lean frame hovered over me in the photo area below the stage with an such an imposing force, I could not help but feel all of the charisma she emote with every note she sang.
Their on-stage camaraderie was also a joy to watch. Juliette was flanked by Celia and Soph who not only each capably dominated their instruments to perfection, but also found moments to get lost together in their own sonics, often times locking in with each other, head-to-head, as if sharing the same musical mind.
As mentioned above, their debut album “Love In The 4th Dimension” is due out 4/7/17 and they surely will be doing more touring in support of it. Be sure to check them out if they ever hit your city.
