LOS ANGELES, CA- Sometimes I photograph, review and post so many acts in a week that every once in a while a band will slip by the wayside. Shame on me when that happens, especially when I liked the band’s music.
At the beginning of next month, SWIMM will host the third installment of their Love You Down Fest. As I was checking out the line-up, I noticed that Sego was slated to perform on both days. I immediately said to myself, “I know that band. I saw them open for Dead Sara at the Teragram last year.”
When I searched through the site to find the review and gallery I typically post for bands whose set I enjoyed, I realized that I never got around to actually finishing up the write up, or publishing the gallery. Shame on me. Especially because I have several of their songs in my various Spotify playlists. Definitely, shame on me.
Sego was originally duo founded by Spencer Petersen (lead guitar) and Thomas Carroll (drums) that has now evolved into a quartet with Alyssa Davey on bass and Brandon McBride on a variety of synths. I loved how Spencer’s relaxed vocals kind of meandered through the music’s complex and often times frenetic instrumentation. That sonic contrast was pretty much perfect.
They toured a ton in 2018- averaging about a show a week by my count- and having released a handful of new singles since their 2016 album “Once Was Lost Now Just Hanging Around”, I have a gut feeling that attendees at Love You Down Fest will have the pleasure of hearing some new music from this band.
If you don’t have tickets for Love You Down Fest yet, buy some (hell, Warpaint is headlining both evenings!). If you end up going to Love You Down Fest, I highly recommend checking Sego out.
