Formerly known as Orange Tulip Conspiracy,  Atomic Ape came out of a two year hiatus to play a two set gig at The Blue Whale in Little Tokyo. The quintet led by Jason Schimmel hasn’t missed a beat, and on a relatively mundane weekday evening, they masterfully executed their blend of progressive rock, Balkan folk, Klezmer jazz and surf rock for friends, family and fans, unleashing a musical barrage of styles and musicianship that is, in my opinion, both unique and unparalleled.

It is smart, if not complex, music that bends genres and leaves you listening in awe as they seamlessly punch intricate rhythms and themes into your aural orafices. The band is currently working to finish their sophomore album, and if the sampling of new music they gave the audience this evening is any indication of what’s to come, the discerning ear has all the more reason to be excited for what’s to come.

I’ve said it before about this band…. but genius like this doesn’t come around very often. If I were you, I’d get familiar with what they guys are doing, and turn on your “notifications” fro any upcoming gigs they have planned in the coming year. Atomic Ape = Mind Blown. Put it in your calendar.
