AUSTIN, TX- It had been some time since I had the privilege of experiencing Algiers’ dynamic live performances. If memory serves me right, it was back in 2016 when they opened for Savages at the iconic El Rey venue. However, the joy I felt at seeing them perform again at Hotel Vegas during SXSW was indescribable.
Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Algiers has always piqued my interest due to their ability to draw from a vast array of genres, including punk rock, hip-hop, soul, industrial, and post-punk. With the release of their latest album, Shook, earlier this year, they continued to push the boundaries of their sonic exploration. I have noticed a significant shift in the way they approach their music, with a more refined and structured sound that is evident in their high production value. Despite their constant experimentation with new sounds and instruments, their willingness to take sonic risks remains true to their core identity as a band.
What I had failed to fully appreciate until recently was the depth of Algiers’ powerful messages woven into their music. A refresher on their repertoire is definitely in order, as the music I heard resonated with heavy political and social themes. Pairing that with their aggressively pulsing sound creates a vibrant atmosphere that keeps one’s head bobbing throughout their set. It is an invigorating experience that speaks to the essence of Algiers’ true colors – a band that not only stays true to their core sound but also uses their platform to share their meaningful message.
