WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA- Amidst the vibrant energy and kaleidoscopic atmosphere of Outloud Fest for WeHo Pride, I stumbled upon a midday set by a recording artist named Black Polish. With the sun high in the sky, casting its golden rays over the crowd, Black Polish took the stage and delivered a solid set.
Black Polish, nee Jayden Nicole Binnix, is an artist who defies easy categorization. Her music is an eclectic blend of soulful melodies, poignant lyrics, and a sonic palette that draws from a myriad of genres, including R&B, pop, and indie rock. As a high school senior at 17, they hit a major milestone by reaching their 5,000,000th stream in the spring of 2023. This impressive feat highlighted their expanding fanbase and the growing impact of their music. Shortly after turning 18 and graduating high school, Jayden signed their first recording and publishing deals with Riptide Music Group and Rough Trade Publishing, setting the stage for their future success.
As someone who was unfamiliar with Black Polish’s work before seeing her perform at Outloud, I was immediately struck by her stage presence. She commanded the attention of the audience with a confidence that belied the early hour of her set and her… I could be wrong… 18 years of life. Her voice, both powerful and emotive, cut through the festival din, creating an intimate connection with everyone in attendance. Each song she performed felt like a window into her soul, offering glimpses of vulnerability, strength, and a unique artistic vision. Her authenticity and relatability have endeared her to many, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. It’s clear that her music resonates on a deeply personal level with her fans, who are drawn to her raw and honest storytelling.
Though this was my first time watching her perform live, upon listening to her available repertoire on streaming services, I think what makes Black Polish so popular with her fans is her ability to weave a narrative that is both universal and intensely personal. Her lyrics seem to often delve into themes of love, identity, and self-discovery, wrapped in melodies that linger long after the final note has been played. There’s a depth to her music that invites repeated listening, each time revealing new layers of meaning.
Black Polish’s performance at Outloud Fest was a testament to their talent and potential. If this first encounter is any indication, Black Polish seems poised to grow its fanbase at a steady clip. It’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
