White Lung was in Los Angeles earlier this year to play a headlining gig at the Teragram Ballroom, and I couldn’t make it out. It was a show that I totally regretted missing. I love me some no-holds barred punk rock. I love it even more when strong, charismatic women are fronting those bands. The fact that I had missed Mish Way and company do their thing, especially on the heels of their fantastic new album “Paradise”, left me slapping my head and proclaiming, “Doh!”

White Lung @ Resident 11/17/16. Setlist. When Red Bull Sound Select announced that White Lung would headline one of their concert dates for “30 Days In LA”, I was ecstatic. I noted the venue, and it was someplace I had never been to before: Resident DTLA. When I arrived at the venue, the first thing I noticed was how small it was. The Teragram Ballroom has a max capacity of about 600. Resident DTLA’s capacity couldn’t have been half that … and you know what? It was perfect.

As soon as the band took the stage and started rocking out their distinct brand of punk, the temperature in the room started to rise, and bodies started to move. Sure enough, after playing some of their slower jams early, they got into the heavier and more frenetic portion of their catalog and a tight mosh pit formed, which moved as Mish sonically guided them. Wearing my camera gear, I couldn’t join in myself, but the level of intensity in the room was palpable, and it was glorious.

Mish is a force of nature on stage. The way she growls. The way she whips her blond mane and she head bangs. The way she stares into the crowd with an intensity that equals her vocal power. It’s the stuff that makes a live show memorable. And being in that venue … in a small venue, sharing such a bad ass musical experience with the privileged few who were lucky enough to score tickets? Well, that’s going to stick with me forever cause it doesn’t get more punk than that.
