For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they from, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.

WHO: Tinashe.

WHAT: Contemporary R&B.

WHEN: 3/15/17 at 800 Congress presented by SONY’S “Lost In Music”.

WHERE: Los Angeles, CA.

WHY: My gut is telling me that Tinashe’s next album, “Joyride” (which is part 2 of a double LP), will be the one that pushes her to the “next level”.  Part 1, 2016’s “Nightride”, received critical acclaim and was ranked by both Rolling Stone and Fuse as #16 on the 20 R&B Albums of 2016 and #14 on The Best 20 Albums of 2016, respectively. If “Nightride” was suppose to be the “after-hours” music, one can only expect “Joyride” to be an album with more upbeat, pop-friendly jams/

HOW: Tinashe’s live show is a well oiled machine. Her performance at 800 Congress for Sony’s “Lost In Music” SXSW showcase was a reminder to her fans that she’s ready and able to take the R&B and pop world by storm. Precision choreography, paired with her lovely voice, over catchy compositions … there’s really nothing more you can ask for or from an aspiring pop artist.

During her 30 minute set, she focused mostly on songs that have been previously released. “Ride of Your Life”, “Watch Me Work”, “Company” and “2 On”. She did premier a new song live during the performance, “Flame”, which was released and serviced to radio on the same day:

Obviously, it all depends on the songwriting, but as long as Tinashe and her crew can put together the perfect tracklist, this one’s going to have a pretty good year.
