The Glaswegian Band LUCIA Left An Impression On Me At SXSW Check Out Photos From Their Performance For ATC Live & British Music Embassy!
AUSTIN, TX- LUCIA is a Glaswegian band that I was able to catch perform SXSW when they performed for ATC Live/British Music Embassy showcase at Latitude 39. Named after their lead singer and guitarist Lucia Fairfull the band also has Hamish Fingland on guitar, Ali Scott on drums and Chris Ballantyne on bass.
LUCIA has been championed by a lot of European critics and publications and I can hear why. Their music is lends itself to catering the the masses. It has enough grit and angst to appeal to the alt/indie rock crowd, while also straddling the marketable with smart indie pop sensibilities. Kinda like an amalgam of P!nk, Shirley Manson and Chrissie Hynde if you could splice their musical genes together in some way.
Their performance at SXSW was not one that I had planned to catch, but I’m chuffed that I did. Solid group dynamics lent itself to a nice party atmosphere in the room, and their musicality was particularly good. The grunge guitars swelled but were never overpowering. The pace of their performance was upbeat and exciting. But what stood out in particular was Lucia herself.
I’m not quite sure what it was. It could have been how present and impactful of a figure she was on stage from my vantage point (below her taking photos). It could have been the devilish black eyeliner which extended past her temples. Something about her physical appearance just felt powerful to me. Couple that visual impression with confident vocals and you’ve got yourself a top-notch, rocking front-woman.
I’ve been keeping an eye on their socials for new music as their last single, “Blueheart”, was released back in February. With hints on socials that they’ve been actively recording new music in between gigs, I’m hoping to hear new tunes soon, and also hoping that they swing by Los Angeles again sooner rather than later as I missed out on their last visit to the City of Angels.
