It’s that time of the year again when Red Bull Sound Select takes over the city with their 30 Days in LA project. Over 70 artist show case their talent to the music fans of the La-la land while the crowd can snack on free pizza, cookies and fuel the sleepless nights with Red Bull kindly provided by he company.

Night 2 took place at The Roxy and featured performances by the bands Candance, SadGirl (who in my opinion were total babes) and the headliners Sunflower Bean.

The all-girl trio Candace wasn’t exactly someone I would have expected opening for Sunflower Bean. They have a gentle shoegaze sound which starkly contrasted the harder more aggressive sounds from later in the evening. But even though their music is dreamlike, I could still see their tough girl character hatching through their dulcet melodies.

Formerly Is/Is, these ladies changed the band’s name to Candace earlier this year, and so far so good if you ask me. These Portland girls landed the Red Bull gig on Sunset Strip and were generously welcomed by the picky LA crowd. The Hypnotizing trio tried to spice up their short set with an instrumental swap but as the clock stroke 9 o’clock the curtains were drawn very promptly Cinderella style.

Their short performance left me wanting to learn more about the band, so I guess I’ll have to wait until I get another chance to check them out.

In a total reversal of sonics from Candace was SadGirl, an all dude trio from LA with surf punk vibes.

I wasn’t going to pick any favorites, but I just can’t resist. It’s obvious that the Red Bull peeps know what’s good and wouldn’t treat our ear drume poorly, consistently curating solid line-ups and talent, but this time they really found a gem.

Vocalist Misha Lindes has got a modern-day Elvis mojo, with a classy style with a hint of kink and creative madness. SadGirl started their set with up-beat American punk then shifted into a virtuoso instrumental break which smoothly transitioned into few heartfelt songs with poetic essence.

The local trio has a captivating stage presence, embodying the kind of charismatic physicality that is so essential to being a captivating performer. Are these guys the complete package? They very well could be with the way they took the Roxy stage by storm with class leaving us satisfied and ready for the final act.

The headliners of the second night took me back in time when the Sunset Strip used to be the heart of rock’n’roll scene. With Sunflower Bean on stage, I felt like I was in presence of the old school debauchery the Sunset Strip was known for …. but in 2016.

After watching Sunflower Bean, my only thought was that I wished could have seen this NYC band play after the presidential elections. I have a feeling that Sunflower Bean would have had a lot to share from the stage.

This band is beyond wild on stage; and you can tell that they proudly rep their hometown with “the NY state of mind”. With drinks being thrown into the crowd, playing raunchy guitar riffs while in the mosh pit with the fans … camera licking!!!!! … these east coasters made us sweat and riot.

It’s hard to believe that the are only in their early 20s, because they gave me the impression they’ve been rocking the stage for at least a decade. After such an energy boost, I regret I didn’t make any post-show plans to keep the rocking and rolling all night long.
