In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Council Member David Ryu and ISAtv hosted Identity LA Music Festival. The free public concert highlighted Los Angeles’ vibrant Asian Pacific American (APA) history as well as showcasing APA’s contributions in shaping the social, cultural, and economic future in Los Angeles. Identity LA featured a few unique and talented artists, one of them being Tokyo-born producer and artist, starRo. Stepping on the stage with his band and many instruments, LA got to experience starRo’s harmonious production of jazzy tunes and funky beats.

StarRo has been recognized on SoundCloud for his unique producing style and use of multi-instrumental sound. Described as “fusing beats with jazz, R&B, soul, chill, emotion, and love” on his SoundCloud bio, starRo performed a set at Identity LA that intertwined them all.

His set transitioned effortlessly from classic jazzy tunes feat. Kyle Dion, to techno electronic mixes feat. One T, then back to starRo grooving to his own funky R&B sounds. At one point he even started playing bongo sounds to “Relapse” as One T ran on and off stage hyping up the crowd. The entire atmosphere starRo brought was upbeat and blissful with heads bobbing and people jamming out simultaneously.

Finishing off his performance, starRo played one of his most well known hits “YAMS” feat. Masego, as he transitioned back into the groovy jazz bass-line he started his set with. The audience seemed to really enjoy his set and it seems like he’ll be gaining a ton of new listeners in the near future.
