Soccer Mommy’s Alternative Bedroom Pop Put Girlschool In A Dreamy Mood REVIEW+PHOTOS: SOCCER MOMMY @ GIRLSCHOOL 2/4/18
LOS ANGELES, CA- Soccer Mommy. It’s an interesting performing name for an artist who released her debut studio album that she wrote as a high school student while attending NYU as a student. But Sophie Allison’s music, which is a dreamy mix of mellow alt-rock vibes, feels more mature than her age would let us believe.
I don’t know too much about Sophie, but from what Mr. Internet told me, she gained significant attention with home-made recordings that she posted on Bandcamp, which got the attention of Fat Possom Records, who released her debut studio album, “Collection”, in 2017. Titled “Collection” because it was, for the most part, a compilation of re-recorded songs she had previously posted on Bandcamp, and a several unreleased songs, the album takes the lo-fi charm of her songs a give them a nice polish, making for a very delightful brisk listen that focuses mostly on various states of the heart. This year, she’s apparently planning on released another album and she’s already released a three song EP, “Clean”, which seems to show her developing and flexing her songwriting chops with catchy hooks and melodies.
Sophie’s performance at Girlschool was delightful and brisk. Wearing baggy jeans, a black crop top with a flannel wrapped around her waist, I got a real laid back 90’s alt-rock vibe from her as she casually performed songs from her repertoire. It was the type of music and performance that I could envision myself listening to on a lazy Sunday afternoon, laid out in the grass on a nice sunny day after smoking a joint with a cold glass of iced-tea nearby.
Still a college student, it will be interesting to see how Sophie balances her music with her studies … I just hope that she’s able to live some life that will inspire her creativity to keep writing and developing her music. There’s a lot of potential here. I hope it continues to bloom.
